What size rubbermaids does everybody use for hatchlings?

SnakeFreak Jan 04, 2006 02:33 PM

I've had my blood for a month and I've been keeping her in a tank thats 12"x24". I'm having trouble getting her to eat, and I'm thinking the cage is too big. I know alot of people use 12qt rubbermaids for hatchlings, but the only 12qt's I can find are 6" tall and have a floor area of about 8"x12", and they look too small for even a hatchling. A water dish and a hide take up pretty much the whole thing. What are the dimensions of the tubs you guys use and where do you get them?

Yep 12Q, little bloods dont really want big open space, they are pretty much hiding all the time. Just make sure you use an appropriate size bowl and hide so they can move around a bit and you should be fine. You also need to be careful with using heat tape etc so that they can get away from the heat and it doesnt get too hot. They can cook in those little cages pretty easy.

How many holes should I put in the tub? I'm going to use a nail that's slightly over 1/8" in diameter, and was thinking of putting about 20 holes in a row going around the tub. Is 20 enough or too many/ too few?

I usually put about 10 1/4" size holes.. so i guess 20 half that size should be ok, maybe a few more. Just set up the cage and add holes if you need them later.

Whats the best way to make the holes? Can I use a drill or will it crack the plastic?

I use a saudering iron and it seems to work best. If you want to drill them that would be pretty easy too. Just dont bear down rediculously hard, let the drill do the work and it shouldnt crack the plastic.
