Incubation question

phiber_optikx Jan 05, 2006 02:46 AM

I know it's early (or late) in the season. But I had some incubator questions I wanted to clear up just to further my knowledge. I plan on getting a hovabator when the time comes. So I will place the eggs in deli cups with vermaculite and water in them and place those in the incubator correct? Do I add water periodically or should the water in the vermaculite be enough? How many eggs will a hovabator hold? How many eggs should I expect from a corns first breeding (1-5,5-10, etc.) When Hope is "of age" Peaches will be too and they will both be bred. Should I buy 2 incubators? Thanks for all of your help. I know there are a lot of questions but I would like to know.

I don't plan on breeding Hope to Chunk (no S) It would be the best of both worlds but I am not prepared to keep all of the offspring and there are too many unwanted hybrids on the market. I am in the process of looking for a normal double het anery and amel. This would give me the most clutch diversity (25% amel,25% anery, 25% normal, and 25% snow) I will be breeding peaches and chunk together to get orange albinos and hopefully white phase.

the incubator you mentioned is nothing more than a foam box with a 10 cent thermostat.you can get foam boxes (usually for free) at pet stores and then add a quality stat of your own choosing.i think this would be a better way to go and not much more expensive in the long run.

i've found that a mixture of 2 parts perilite to 1 part vermiculite with an equal amout of water by weight works well.you'll probaly not need to add water, most people get there medium too wet.have fun!

thanks. is it the air temperature or the cround temperature that matters? So how would the foam box get heated if it were homemade? Heat tape? a uth? wouldn't that be a fire hazard?

the air and the incubating medium would be the same temp. for a heat source you could use heat tape flexwatt,it won't take much because your only raising the temp a few degrees.my snake room is 75-78 degrees and my incubator (for corns/kings/milks) temp is 79.9 so it doesn't take much of a heat source to make up the difference.the most important link in this chain is the thermostat,a quality proportional stat is important.last year i switched to a herp stat and it performed flawless.matt at mg reptiles is a good person to talk to about stats.have fun!
