Sage bushes

APLAXAR Jan 05, 2006 06:41 PM

does anyone have any experience or input on planting live sage bushes in a Thayeri tank, it grows like weeds out here and i am bored so i am going to make a real nice natrual tank, and i think it would be fine but it is aromatic so i dont know if that would be a problem or not for herps

thanks adam

Adam:

Where do you live? By "sages" do you mean plants of the genus Salvia? If so, there are a number of species of Salvia that grow within the native range of thayeri in Mexico. The term "sage" also is used, though not in a botanical sense, for plants of the genus Artemisia--like the aromatic sagebrush that grows throughout the Great Basin. I don't see any of these as being a problem for your snake, but do have doubts about their viability in an indoor tank. Salvias of the SW U.S. and northern Mexico grow in full sun, low rainfall settings and likely won't survive long indoors.

Cheers,

Bob

I can't think of where I saw it on the web. You may have to google it, but I did see a list of all different type of plant species that could be planting in a live terrerium. These plants provided good hides, easily maintained, and grew well. It would be awesome to have a live terrerium (small ecosystem) mimicing the native mexicana ssp habitat from Mexico and it would be cool see how the snake responds, possibly activity wise to convential terrium set-ups. Good luck in what you decide.

yeah i would like to see how they react also all my thayeri never hide, they are always out in the open, especially the girl i got from mexicanamak and she will be the lucky recipient of the new display tank, i think she is the best canidate because she love climbing on anything i put in the sterilite and is always front and center, not to mention she is a beautiful leonis

I love great display tanks, what you're planning sounds fantastic. Great project. They can be a real bear to maintain and keep clean, but if your collection isn't too big, they are more than worth it to have something that awesome to look at. Once you get that thing put together, you are definitely going to have to show it off... by all means post here and e-mail me a few pics.

What you describe reminds me of the Indianapolis Zoo Reptile House. They do a fantastic job with their displays and I would love to have the time again to set a few up similar to what they do. The thing is attached to an amazing desert biosphere with some of the coolest desert plants I've ever seen in a man made environment. The reptile house itself is rather small, but exceptionally well done and the display tanks they have in there for the snakes are incredible to look at. Nothing better at a zoo than a great reptile facility with well done displays.
