Dogs and Dragons

LarrysMom Jul 24, 2003 06:29 PM

We are thinking of getting a dragon and want to know about other peoples experiences with them and their pet dogs. We are worried if the lizard should get out of the cage how would it fair with dogs around?? We have two old miniture poodles who probably couldn't see the darned thing but we also have a 2 year old 45 pounds mutt that thinks everything is a toy.
Thanks in advance for the advice.
Sherrie
P.S. Christy...when will you have your leashes for sale???

well, i have no experience with dogs and dragons, but my friend does. His dog seems to get along fine, but always under SUPER close supervision. As long as the dog isnt that big, (they could step on em, or bite em realllllly hard) but usually dragons will fair pretty well with smaller sized dogs, as they will go into threat mode and possibly bite...someone corr3ect me if im wrong!

well i have 5 dogs .. all english setters.. and they ignore my lizards when i am holding them or if he is running around inside the house.. but if i turn by back for once second i have a feeling they wouldn't be so "casual". granted all of my dogs are field trail dogs (they are trained never to catch or grab anything without being told to) i don't really know about the tendency of regular house dogs (if they like to "hunt" ) etc...i have only had one problem.. and that was when i put my beardie in his cage on the cement pavement on a somewhat cool day so he could get some tummy heat.. and i went inside to grab the phone.. when i went back out.. to my dismay boris was barking away at spike and pushing his cage around.. well from then on the cage went on the pinic table and boris stayed inside... i do think though that a cat would be worse than a dog though..

I have a greyhound and he thinks my dragons are the absolute greatest things ever. He's usually very good, but when they take off across the floor its a case of "oh crap, grab the dog!" I think though, that your beardies, when fully grown, would be fine with the dog. Mine are fairly formidable, and they do puff up when hank sniffs them and stuff.

Good luck!

Thanks for the stories. The moral of those stories is WATCH your dog!! We are used to supervising them since we had a bird who came out to play. Thanks again,
Sherrie

My dog barks at nothing in the world except for our dragons. The only trouble they have with each other (the dragons could care less, really) is that the dog can't smell them in the tank, so she freaks out because things that move are supposed to smell!! Gobi can ride around on the dogs back and all is well. I wouldn't worry. You do have to keep a close eye, though. They can both be quick animals (when they want to!
