Eye Problems With Basilisks

mustangjumpoff Jul 24, 2003 06:31 PM

I have 2 basilisks and they are constantly having eye problems. I keep bringing them to the vet and nothing seems to help. At the moment the green one seems fine, but the brown one hardly opens his eyes and when he does its only b/c I've flushed them with Saline. Does anyone have any advice for me. I'm at a loss and so is the vet.

Normally this is not really an eye problem but the symptoms of a more severe thing.
Did you have their feces checked?
How old are they?
WC or CB?
How do you keep them (size, temps, light, furniture)?
What do you feed?
What supplements do you give?
Do you keep plumifrons and basiliscus (or vittatus) together???
Exact answers may help to narrow down your problem.

No on the feces thing, but I guess I should. They are in a 20 gallon tank with a special UV light fixture. I think its around mid 80's to 90's in the tank. They eat cricketts and meel worms. They have a large water dish in there for humidity reasons and plus they like to play in it. As fas as whats in there, they have a log with some fake plants on it, a resting hammock and one that has another little water dish in it. Am I missing anything?

Hm..a 20 gallon tank may fit for 1-2 babies in their first 6 weeks. I hope these animnals aren´t older. For adults you should built sth of at leastz 400, better 5-800 g. Even a water bassin of 20 g woukld be too small for semiadults.
If semiadults or adults are forced to live in such a tiny tank, they suffer from enormous stress and always will display the symptomes you describe.
Also constatnly 80-90 F alloever the tank is not OK. They need warmer and cooler places-which of course is impossible to establish in a 20 g.
You do not mention any supplements? You should know that under captive conditions you have to give at least Vit D3 (those UV bulbs are worthclose to nothing) and calcium salts, better also add the other vitamines.
Also cricvkets and mealworms as the only food source is very far from a healthy diet.
Sorry, but sounds liek you know nothing about keeping of basilisks.
Please carefully read my caresheet (link) and take it serious. Otherwise you will soon have two dead bassies.

That was very negative help. You don't have to be so mean. Their cage is fine, they are still young. Anyway I'm getting a new cage from Cages by design. And I have read a lot about them online and I have talked to several reptile breeders and handlers. Obviously I care about them if I have been taking them to the vet. I bring them just for checkups, when nothing is even wrong. The cage has a warmer side and a cooler side. Its not that hot all over. And I do thank you for telling me what kind of supplement you suggest, I will see if I can find it today.

You really should conduct your mannerism in an alternative way. It is very rude and unappreciative. But I do thank you for your one and only helpful tip (on the vitamins). Be more considerate next time you attempt to bash on someone.

Sorry, I did not want to be mean.
Its just that you are one of endless cases.
There are so many people out there ignoring good information and looking for those people who say the things they want to hear.
They always find some..
But ist not for the benefit of their animals.
And believe it or not: I swear: Every word I said about housing conditions for basilisks is true.
And a 20 g tank is already to small for 2 months old animals. That also holds true as well as the fact that such a tank is deinitely too small to establish temperature zones of significant distribution.
Posts like yours always make me upset-and i admit that that may penetrate my sentences. I have just seen way too many poor animals and too many people who WANt to ignore relavant information which does not fir into theri money or space plans.
Pleas ask others in this and other forums.
I am always helpful, where ever I can. And I doubt that you will be able to find any detrimental or bad information in my posts on housing of basilisks.
I keep these fascinating critters for decades and I have done my resaearch.
And again I admit that it makes me upset to see them unnecessarily suffering from non apt conditions.
Despite of my emotions, I still try to give you good Info.
But to hear that you want to ingnore everything with exception of the (cheap and easy to get) supplements, does not make me calm.

I wanted you to know that I have bought the D3 vitamins and also I just placed an order with Cages by design for a new, bigger cage. It is 3'Dx3'Lx2'W and has rock ledges for leaping as well as a huge water dish as well as more. Is it true you can feed them feeder fish? If so, what info can you provide me about feeding them fish? And if there is anyother positive feedback you can give, please do.
