My Box Turtle may be sick

bap678 Jan 06, 2006 11:36 AM

I have a female, Three-Toed box turtle. Not sure how old, had her for about 17 years (about a 6 inch long shell).

She has always been a uniform dull brown color for shell and skin. However, just recently, overnight, the top of her "beak" has turned a dark brown color. It isn't dirt of any sort.

I have never seen this before.

Does anyone know if this is a problem or not?

Thanks,
Bernie

If you could post a close up pic; it would help.

Also if you are able to; try getting your boxie's mouth open.

Use a popsicle stick or reptile mouth opening device to have a good look inside; especially at the top where the darker color has appeared. Slide the popsicle stick from one side of his jaw to the other rather than straight down (Avoid ever doing that) If you can manage to hold the stick down over his tongue, he will hold his mouth open for a good look.

It's a bit tricky as he will try and spit it out.

Look for any white cottony growth or black sores, or bleeding.

Get back with us.
