airline allowing reptiles?

alaina Jan 06, 2006 03:15 PM

Hi, I am overwhelmed by the amount of forums to choose from, so I went to the most general one I could find... ok, so I am in Hawaii and soon flying back to NY. I have a Jackson Chameleon and found out that I can obtain a permit from the Dept of Land and Nat. Resources to take him. Although I first need permission from the airline to bring him with me. These permits are offered, one per household, for up to 4 chameleons, although I can not figure out an airline that will allow me to bring him in the cabin with me. I suppose as a last resort I will send him under the plane. But there must be some way, or else these permits would not be available??!! I know there are specific requirements for flying with cats or dogs, I just can not find out anything about flying with a (harmless) reptile! Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks - Alaina

Call the acutal airline that you would be possibly using to come back home on. Explain that you have a small lizard and would like to know if it would be acceptable to carry it on the plane in a secure cat carrier. Usually they will tell you up front yes or no. I would think something as harmless as a chameleon they would have no problems allowing it in a very small cat carrier especially one that would fit under the seat. You may or may not be asked to pay for an extra seat space for the animal if they do allow it on the plane. If the airline says no, tell them you won't be able to fly with them then and move on to calling the next possible airline.

A lot of times airlines have no specific policies on herps and small exotics so it ends up being on a case by case basis if they choose to allow the animal on or not.
