Finding slate and live moss

xris Jan 06, 2006 10:25 PM

I went out today to start on my first tropical terrarium for the dart frogs I plan on purchasing. I couldn't find live moss or slate at either home depot, petsmart, or petco.

I know I can order moss online, but I'd prefer to pick it up somewhere. Is there any king of place that's going to have this stuff? I'm looking for cushion moss.

Also, where can I pick up some slate? I remember when I was a kid, that my parents had their aquarium decorated with some of the stuff. Is it found in tropical fish shops?

You can find good slate at a lot of fish and reptile stores.

As for the moss, there is a place I know near my house where there is good quality moss growing wild that I can collect. I plan to get some in the spring. It takes a bit of hunting usually, but you may be able to find a colony of it nearby.

I don't recall ever having seen live, growing moss in petstores, other than aquatic moss at fish stores.

living in texas, it would be pretty hard to find some in the wild. There's a drought right now, so I think it would be next to impossible currently.

Keep in mind that any moss you find around your house in the temperate US is going to need a dormant period to live year-round.

Home depot has slate in the tile isle. It is like 8 bucks for a 4 back of 12 by 12. Its pretty easy to smash into the sizes you want.
