Just so happy

gypsy1dragon Jan 07, 2006 12:40 AM

Just had to post a message. My son walked out the front door of our house about a month ago and a baby corn snake fell on his head. LOL. Had a nice long lump in her, so we figured she chased a lizard onto the door frame.

We have tried to feed her at the same time as the rest of our collection, but she would never eat, so tonight I decided to try to force feed her a pinky head. Didn't work! So I put her in a deli cup with the head and left her in the dark (like I have done for the past 3 weeks, f/t, live and tuna scented) and low and behold, SHE ATE!

I hope she does well, we really wanted a normal for our group. I do hope it is a female.

Good for you & way to go!!! That's always a good feeling to have a reluctant feeder finally give in and quit the "Hunger Strike"!
Where do you live - Florida?

Yes, I live in Daytona Beach. Are you in Florida? Funny thing is all my life out here I have seen garter snakes and black snakes, pigmy rattlers and corals, even a pine woods snake, but never corn snakes. Now in the past couple of weeks during our cold snaps have seen a couple of corns. A friend from work just brought me another baby corn, but I have to get a picture of it. Not a normal, has gray background and brown to black saddles. Too bad Santa didn't bring me a digital cameral lol.

Thanks for your reply.

the corn you mentioned, with the grey back ground is a normal, native to miami, they are called miami phase... here is a photo of mine

gypsy1dragon Jan 07, 2006 11:06 PM

and I would say his background is more light tan and his saddles more brown or gray. If he wasn't W/C I would think maybe charcoal ... also his belly checkers don't start until about halfway down his body.

His colors show up okay in these pics. All I have is a $20 keychain camera, but the color is okay.

Thanks for looking and any other opinions

It has no red/orange, no head pattern, and no checkers the first 1/3 of its body because.....It is not a corn. It is a rat snake. Very pretty though. If you live in florida I would say a yellow or an everglades.

I've seen your pics and I'm sorry to tell you, but that is definetely a baby Yellow ratsnake. Their blotches are more H -shaped than baby corns & most importantly they have no spearpoint head markings like a corn, but instead have a single dark band that runs across their heads just in front of their eyes. As they get older (within two years) the blotches disappear and the yellow ground color comes out with four longitudal dark stripes. I don't think you want to breed that one to your cornsnakes , unless you're in to hybrids. . .

Thank you for your replies. I thought his marking weren't the same, but I never even thought of rat snake, learn something new every day. No I don't think I would breed it with my corns, unless perhaps it is a female and bred to one of my males ... I don't think I have the right combination for creamsicle ... I will probably release him in a safe place the next warm snap we have.

I was wondering how to tell the difference ... I will have to take some pictures of the normal one I just got to eat and post them just to make sure.

Pretty little baby, though, isn't he?

Just because it is not a corn does not mean it wouldn't be a good pet. It is a very pretty snake.

I see you have ratsnakes, phiber. Are there many differences? Care, attitude, etc? This little baby seems pretty docile.

They guy who bought her to mee is scared of snakes, just scooped her into a cooler (at least he didn't kill her). He freaked out when I just reached down and picker her up. He was all, "It's biting you!" I just laughed and told him I didn't even notice, lol. Now she might open her mouth at me, but doesn't strike.

Just thought I'd give you a laugh. After a few minutes of me holding her, he would touch her a little. Maybe he'll learn snakes are good.

There is absolutely no difference in care. Attitude is a little different. I have no experience with yellow rats but I do have black rats. My black rats are VERY active. They are not as shy as my corn. Peaches sleeps on top of her hides and out in the open. You can see them climing around at any given time. Peaches and Chunk can usually be seen cruising there cage as little as 2 hours after eating a good sized meal.

You guys are so lucky. I am from Cali, and an area where the only thing you can catch wild are garters! I wanna catch a wild corn! (pouting).

I'm near you! Out on rt 415 in the boonies out toward Osteen. I've never seen a wild corn, either, but we have lots of water moccasins. I've seen corals, a rattler or two, and one lonely garter. I'm going to do some hunting when the weather warms up. On our five acres, I sure should have something.

Leslie

gypsy1dragon Jan 08, 2006 12:58 AM

Although I'm not so far out 415. I've never found them around here until this year when it started getting cold, believe it or not, except for two injured by cars (tried but couldn't save them. Of course, now I know, the last one is a rat snake, but that was caught in town by a co-worker. I'm just lucky he didn't bring me a coral or pigmy rattler lol. But those I know very well.

Where do you get your pinkies? Daytona or Orlando?

Small world. If you know where the old microwave tower is, we're near that and the Alamana sign.

I get live pinks when needed in New Smyrna or in Daytona, but I've been ordering f/t from the Gourmet Rodent mostly. I've got other lizards so I need everything from pinks to med/large rats for the four foot red tegu.

We need to do coffee and talk reptiles some day.

Leslie

gypsy1dragon Jan 09, 2006 07:15 AM

Yes, we will have to do that. Maybe coffe at the Osteen Diner or in Port Orange or something.

Maybe we can even go in together ordering f/t, share shipping costs. Have you ever used RodentPro? In my searching, they are about half the price or less from e1 else, but shipping cost is so high, even then it is still a lot less. Just don't know about quality.

if you force feed, depending on the size of the baby, the head might be too big. I was told if I was not careful, I could break the snakes jaw (the baby I was trying to feed was tiny). So I was told to use an adult mouse's tail. It is tube like and easily goes down the tube like snake. I know it may not be the most nutritious part of the mouse, but once my little guy had that in his tummy, he ate one meal on his own.
