Pituophis and Boaphile cages

daveboyle Jul 24, 2003 07:19 PM

Hi everyone-
I am intersted in hearing others' experience, if any of you keep your larger pits in Boaphile enclosures. If so, how would you rate the cages, ease of use and ventilation design?
Thanks a lot,
Dave B

I've never kept anything but a boa or python in a Boaphile cage, but I can give you some info.

The door design is simple and nice. It is swing-down solid piece of 1/4" thick acrylic with real metal hinges bolted on. Very easy access - much easier than sliding bypass doors.

There are no lips or crevices for the snakes to hide in, so no surprises from above when you reach into the cage.

There is very little ventilation built-in. This is easily remedied with a hole-saw and some 1/4" hardware cloth and nuts and bolts. Alternatively you can just drill 1/4" holes. The material drills/cuts easily.

Let me say something about the material. Imagine squishing styrene foam until very dense, then put a paper thin coating of PVC on the top and bottom of the sheet. That is what expanded foam PVC is like. It is somewhat soft in the middle but with a harder coating. It holds heat very well and glues well with PVC cement. It is easy to repair if damaged. It isn't as tough as styrene cages (ala BARRS) or ABS cages (ala Neodesha) if you kick it with cowboy boots, but plenty tough for big boas.
