Painting...

newturtlemom Jan 07, 2006 01:09 PM

Hi everyone,
We are going to be painting my house soon, and I am a little worried about my turtles. I have 2 RES that are in a 40 gallon feeder tank. It does not have a cover which I might need to get soon cause one of them likes to stand up and peak over... but that is another story.

Anyway, we will begin painting soon and while I can try to move them out each room will be painted eventually. Will the fumes harm them? My room will probably be painted last. If it is last I can try and get them into the room that was painted first because hopefully by then the fumes will be a bit more faded... But if my room is not last then I might have more of an issue.
Any advice or information is GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks!

This is my problem too, we need to paint. I don't know where I'm going to put animals while doing it. I'm thinking of boarding the bird at the vet's when we start.
Did you know that if you stir a tablespoon of vanilla extract into a gallon of paint it will cut the fume problem way down? It won't completely rid the paint of it's odors but it does help to cut it down.
That really does work I've done it before.
The only other thing to do is of course open the windows to get the smell out.

I am worried about the turtles breathing it so I'm thinking of leaving their tanks where they stand but housing them in something smaller for a day or 2 until the odors are gone.

Good luck with your painting, it's a chore I am not really looking forward to this spring.
