Toes are falling off

babyleopardgecko Jan 07, 2006 01:51 PM

I have a leopard gecko and I got her last january, so she's about a year old. she's always had problems with her back left foot when she sheds. She never seems to get the skin off of her toes. I noticed recently that her back left foot is all curled up and she doesn't walk on it and it looks like it's turning black around her ankle. Is her whole foot going to fall off? I don't know what to do. Please help!

Since your Leo has had continuous problems shedding do you assist it in removing all of the shed from the feet? Do you have a humid hide to help with the shedding? It sounds like you have a major problem going on of old shed being left on the foot and it is constricting, cutting off the blood flow. It sounds like you need to put your leo in some warm water (belly high) to help loosen the skin and get the dead skin off IMMEDIATELY. You can use a Q-Tip to help rub the skin off. If it won't come off using a Q-Tip you may need to very carefully pull it off with some blunt ended tweezers. But only after the skin has been thoroughly soaked to loosen it.

If it is turning black from the ankle down you probably need to get her to a vet asap.

I've tried warm soaks many times and have tried q-tips and tweezers. She seems to be in pain when I try and do those things so I start to feel bad and stop. A couple of other times when I soaked her then tried to get the dead skin off I ripped off a couple of her toes and she was bleeding a little and she started to twitch the foot that was bleeding. I don't really know what else to do.

It sounds to me like a trip to the vet ASAP is necessary.

Get that leo to a vet! He most likely has a septic infection from this foot, and needs antibiotics to save his life, not to mention the foot.
