MY NEW GTP

Coiledbattalions Jan 07, 2006 08:43 PM

well i got my new gtp...had it in my extra lg exo terra...but this snake is a baby, and i mean has no idea what food is kinda baby lol...i have been there b4 with other snakes but this is obviously not like them...i had the humidity at 75 dropping to 60 over night into the morning, but i started seein the snake showing early signs of dehydration and stress...so i took the plastic container it came in...one of those types that you get fruit in in the super market...you know what i mean...made 2 perches in it and put about .5 inch water on the bottom...and sprayed the inside...and put it over some bedding over the undertank heater...i also have the heat lamp that keeps the ambient cage temp around 82...i dont believe the lamp will cause a problem with clear plastic cup...but i put fake plants to shade it a lil bit....hoping to get it to eat in 2 days or so...just wondering what everybody thinks

Baby GTP set up

Are you keeping the baby in the container with water on the bottom? Greg Maxwell advises not to do that as chondros do spend time periodically on the bottom of the cage, and you want ambient humidity (moisture in the air), not water. Keeping them in a plastic container and spraying once or twice a day should keep the humidity around 80%. Babies need to be kept at a more constant humidity than the adults. 85 degrees would be optimum temp for it. I'm not sure what the link was that Julian provided, but perhaps it's to Greg's website with the caresheets.

yes...it is water on the bottom and i am aware of how they will from time to time go on bottom...but this isnt its permanent set up, it is just for a few days maby to keep it hydrated and get it eating...then im gona see how its doing and i will probly take it out of the deli type cup then...it has perches it can stay on perfectly but the plastic container is only big enough to house it but not for it to really explore...i know its smller then would be perfect but its all i have and i need to be able to control it and the environmentla factors more then i could in the bigger cage...which is only 24tall by 18wide by 18 long..but i need to keep stress levels to a minimum beacause i could tell if i kept it in the biger exo terra it was beggining to show RI...so i put it in the tiny cup to hopefully head that off...unfortunately it is pretty much a hatchling so there are no guarantees things will work out

it does unfortunately seem that it has issues...there is some open mouthed breathing unfortunately....its still minimal but i know that is to much especially with a baby gtp...all i can do is really leave it alone for the next week in its cup and see what happens

Have you thought of taking it to a vet? It would be awful to lose the animal to a treatable disease if you don't have to. I know Julian lost two to R.I. last year and he's very careful with them. It didn't take long for them to get beyond the point that they could be saved.
