it just seems that some snakes take a bit of force to pop and i was wondering how likely it would be that this is damaging to the animal..thanks

Yes, you can hurt a snake trying to pop the hemipenes. I find it much easier and more reliable to use a good set of probes on hatchling balls.
probing can hurt them quicker in my opinion......due to people not being able to see what they are ripping apart inside the snake..........(especially if they try it the wrong way (as in backwards)....
popping can hurt snakes too.....especially if it is done over and over again and again and again like the boxes of wild babies people pick through over and over again at shows and all.......
do it once....mark the box and you always know what it is.....

there's alot of people that can just run there thumb accross and feel ,you must know how to probe and pop them,other wise you are defenty,putting the snake at risk,have someone that really knows what there doing show you how to do both of these's ,,other wize have someone else check the sex of the animal ...i hope this helped you out

both popping and probing can harm an animal. I prefer to pop hatchlings. I find it is fairly reliable, safe and causes no harm or damage to the hatchling (if done properly). I almost always probe sub-adults and adults.
