florida/georgia trip

miltb Jan 08, 2006 01:03 PM

Hello,
i have not visited this forum in a while and I am glad to read everyone appears well! Four of us are planning a trip to the northern Fl/Southeastern Ga area around the beginning of May. I'm curious if anyone is from that area or at least familiar with it... we are just looking to see stuff and photograph and basically get away from the wives, kids, and jobs! Is that still Eastern King territory or more Florida influence? Also, those wide-banded Easterns from Georgia, is that southeast or southwest Ga? Any other thoughts on what we would see at that time of the year...We are from New England, so I'm not sure how hot it is by that time. We are flying down as further proof we have no plans on collecting. Thanks! -Milt

I've lived there for about six years and know some good areas. Don't know if I an make it down there yet (I'm currently living in SE. NC) Here's a pic of a typical SE Ga. individual from Mc. Intosh county. He's a HUGE five and a half foot male that eats LARGE rats! The kings there are primarily ALL easterns with a few individuals displaying some speckling in the dark areas. Some DO have wide bands, but some don't. It all depends on locality. The closer you get to the coast, the wider the bands usually get. But if you go towards the Okeefenokee swamp there are also some wide banded individuals there.
If you head towards the northern Duval county/Nassau county area you could find some intergrades, but those are extremely rare. I used to herp for intergrades near the St. Mary's/ Navy base area in Extereme SE. GA. near the FL. border, but never found anything but yellow rats, racers & canebrakes. I did find a lot of Easterns near Brunswick, Ga. though. When will you be going there?

Hey Zee,
thanks for the reply! I was hoping we could try to get together in your neck of the woods but it looks like we will be heading further south. We should be somewhere around jacksonville from May 4 through the 8th, as a starting point. Any chance of you heading down that way? I think we had the Okefenokee in mind too. I was riding through that area a long, long time ago and saw a trucker flatten a large 5-6 foot fat Eastern King right before us. Not a good sight! Let me know if you think you might be around. Thanks! -Milt

Not sure yet. . .I am also planning a trip to Alterna land in the middle to late May. Send me your e-mail address so I can get in touch with you in case I do decide to head south in early May.
