Gravid Females???????? Help!

KanesKreatures Jul 24, 2003 08:18 PM

I purchased 2 females about 5-6 wks ago. Both were purchased as possibly gravid, and in the last 4 weeks one female has gained over 100 grams and the other started gaining weight about 2 weeks ago now about 40 grams. By the weights I assumed they must be gravid, but I cannot feel eggs in either. These are my first dragons that I've had for breeding and only experienced breeding snakes and cresteds till now. Should I be expecting eggs and just being anxious about not feeling eggs or could it be that they are just fat...LOL

Thanks for any help or suggestions

Thanks, Eddie & Desiree'

Hi Desiree... long time no talk... it sounds like she is developing eggs from the weight gain... I don't think in 4 weeks your dragon would gain 100g just from eating lol.. not unless it was starved and unhealthy when you bought it...

Do you know if the eggs were fertile for the previous owner? If the eggs are infertile, they will stay squishy and soft and be very difficult to feel inside the female... if they are fertile they will feel more like marbles and firmer.. but you can't always tell... try soaking her for a few minutes in warm water and then feel her belly.

Keep a close eye on her.. watch for scratching and digging around the cage and in the corners.. if she starts doing that.. she's looking for a place to lay her eggs.. and at that point you'll want to remove her into an egg laying box.

Hope that helps.. feel free to email me with any more questions or help. g'luck with the eggs.
