Rob,

I sincerely hope that you did not pay too much money for your Thai "yellowheaded" Reticulated Python. First as to how large they get: they get as large as any other normal Reticulated Python.

One of these "yellow headed" color variations was captured in my neighborhood (in Thailand) and brought to me for examination; it was a young 3 meter male. It only is a color variation of the normal P. reticulatus and this variation comes from the normal gene pool found in the P. reticulatus here, in the case of the one that I examined, the central Thai flood plains. I really love how they come up with these names! I guess it all has to do with marketing.

Second, I am curious in how you obtained a Thai P. reticulatus if you are outside of Thailand. They are a protected species here and export of this species is prohibited by Thai law. It is quite possible that you have contributed to the illegal international animal trade. Would it be possible to let me know how this became available. There has also been the sale of the rare Varanus salvator komaini, which has also come onto the market in the US and is only found in Thailand (its export is also prohibited by law).

Cheers,

Michael

Ya I didn't get it yet, I'm just doing research on them so I'll be ready.
Thanks again

I contacted Bob Clark, who breeds the "yellow-headed" reticulated pythons. He wrote back that he has had them since the 1970's which would have been before the time they started protecting them, so there are some legitimate ones out there and it is a good possiblility that they may have come from him.

Cheers,

Michael
