Info of type of tortoise????

James75 Jan 08, 2006 08:06 PM

Hi All,

First time posting anything on the Totoise Forum. I'm a snake guy myself but need some help. My wife sister has me if I can find her some Tortoises. She said they were the smallest breed and think they were called Speckled. Any info would be great, price, availablity, and where could I find one.

Thanks,
James

This is a fun question to answer.

They are one of if not the smallest tortoise in the world. They are very difficult to keep in captivity. They are almost impossible to find and if you can find them they are almost impossible to get with a price tag of a couple grand... not kidding.

I'm talking speckled padloper which is the only 'speckled' tortoise I can think of.

EJ,

Thanks for the info.

I will pass it along to her but I'm sure she does not want to pay that much. Can you give me any suggestion on a small breed that won't break the bank. She will want one that has some pattern and is colorful.

Thanks again,
James

Western Hermann's tortoise's are pretty, stay pretty small (8inches or so) and are fairly hardy. They are quite active and personable too, or at least I have found mine to be and from what I've read other people think so too. Being active they do still need a fairly decent size enclosure.

"golden" greeks are also pretty and not to pricey.
