"Georgia Boy" a true 6 foot Eastern King

BlueKing Jan 08, 2006 10:20 PM

This guy is HUGE! I can honestly say that John Hays & Keith H. have taken EXCELLENT care of their animals. They are in Super shape. And this monster here is only 7 years old!!! He'll be paired up with "Bonkers" (in a couple of months) who now belongs to Keith (the snake pictured in the last post) But anyway, here he is: Another RAT WRECKER:

Okee Dokee. . .
I just picked this pair up last weekend (and they weren't cooled off yet), so they'll be breeding about a month later than the rest of my collection - probably around April.

Is size a genetic trait in Kings? I am doing some select breedings to see if size is genetic in some thamnophis species.

That IS one of my goals in breeding these guys - to see if "giants" are genetic. So far (based on most of the babies I've seen from Kevin Enge) it is. All of his babies that I've seen grow up ended up crossing the 5 foot barrier easily. . .Most of his breeding stock originated from a six foot male that he used consistently for many years!
I will be breeding TWO different pairs of giants this coming spring. Should turn out some HEALTHY babies!

This has me with a question Zee. If you have "Giant"
Eastern kings, can you tell when they are babies, that they may end up being big boys and girls? Or do some of these six foot monsters start out normal sized, like a typical eastern king, and then take off in size at 6 months to a year of age? Or maybe instead of growth spurts, they grow at a normal rate their whole life, but instead of slowing down like some easterns, keep up a more moderate pace, for a longer time.

You can tell, because they start growing right away as much as 2 - 2.5 inches a month consistently until their first year, then they slow down just a little to about 1.5" - 1.75" a month! Other "normal" kings usually grow at a rate of about an inch a month.
