Cage type for CWD

Mothi Jan 08, 2006 10:57 PM

Which type of cage is better for a CWD, one that is mostly land with a water dish or one that is filled with water and provided land and climbing areas? (example, normal reptile tank vs turtle tub style with land and water areas)

I have a 2.5" CWD from snout to vent and he has a 40g reptile tank as a home. He seems to really like taking a swim in his bowl so I am wondering if I should change his cage style. I was also wondering if it was possible to have tooooooooo big a cage for them. He looks really puny in his cage right now but he loves to move around. He knows where is food dish is too and eats well. The biggest concern over larger cages is finding food, but he has proven he can find it since he is very active.. I am sure he should be able to find his food dish in a larger cage... right?

If a mostly water type tank would be good for him, how deep should the water be? I would think he shouldn't be so stupid to drown provided plenty of items to climb out of the water on. I mean, they don't need kiddie pools in the wild right? But of course it provides too much unnecessary risks, then I can understand some restriction in depth.

I would NOT recommend changing the viv for your WD to having all water at the bottom. My WD likes to deficate in his water and if yours does to, you are going to have to completely clean out his viv almost everyday to keep infection down from swimming in nasty water. I would suggest just having a big enough water bowl that he can submerse his entire body into.
