thereptile May 18, 2003 08:17 PM

hey,
lately ive been going through alotta sources for what a basking temp should be. Ive seen reccomdations say it should be 85 to 95. Others say that you should have 95-105. Others say 105-115 and others say 115 to 130. What do you guys think about this?

They can be as high as 115, I make sure there is a gradient and they can move away or closer to the heat. I have a vertical log in most of my tanks so they can move up or down to the basking temp they want.
The cool side of the tank should be around 85.

For my youngest beardie who is about 5 months old, the basking temp is around 110. For the older 2 who are 11 months old, and the other 15 months old, the basking temp is about 100. Once I moved them into their adult cages I lowered the temps because I would probably blow up the house running 110-115 on those cages.

My temp is about 108 now and he seems to be loving it, I had it at 90 some time ago, but bad idea, he stopped eating and wouldn't poo. they need that warmth to digest and they won't eat unless they are confident they can digest, at least I've learned with mine. Go to petsmart or somewhere and pick up a 100w BASKING bulb, make sure it's for basking and not just for light. keep the light about 12" above the basking area and that should do the trick, u can adjust the height as needed in order to raise or lower the temp in the basking area. good luck! and let me know how he does

If you wanna be safe, go for 100 degrees. I don't think you can go wrong from 95-105 degrees. My dragon's cage is in the high 90's during the cooler months, when the house is cooler, and rises up to 105 and even higher during the hot summer months. No big deal, bearded dragons are used to scorching Australian summers! Just make sure that they have a cooler retreat.
