Another one of those cage questions...

SWH Jan 09, 2006 02:56 AM

I have a 3 1/2 foot water monitor and I keep her in a converted chameleon cage which is 6 feet tall and 7 feet wide. She has all of the needed water stuff but that's not the thing I want to get into. My question is can I keep her in a cage meant for a rainforest arboreal snake(ETB)? The cage is easily 9x10 and has a land/surf option as well as sturdy branches for basking and even a nifty waterfall. The set up set me back around 7 grand and my rep vet said it would work as long as I remembered to lower some of the branches as to prevent injuries from falling. But I wanted to get some of the most reptuable all knowings before I did anything.

10x9x7 but the one pictured is smaller and doesn't have the attached 'island and ramp' I'll get pics up as soon as humanly possible.

The size is actually large for a 3 1/2 water. My argus would live to book a room lol. Not having a pic of the vines and what not I can't really say if I'd be concerned about falling. I've never had that problem before. Just make sure the high stuff is over water, I'm sure he'll enjoy a diving board (kidding).

Good luck and post some pics. I'm always looking for caging ideas.

I know it is but I mainly did it so she could have the option to swim...rather than using the tub or a kitty litter pan. She likes swimming, A LOT, maybe even more than most Waters so I figured I'd take advantage of that and get her an enclosure that is large enough for her to swim in without having to scrunch up just to turn around. In the wild, she'd have acres upon acres so I don't see the harm in giving her a big enclosure as long as I can properly maintain temps and humidity isn't much of a problem.

They aren't so much vines as they are branches/logs. I know a guy who keeps his green tree monitors in enclosures like this but again, trees don't get as big as waters and his dimensions aren't as long. His breeder cages are 12 feet tall and his trees are happier than clams.

Do you build your own cages? I built one, my chameleon cage and it's...yikes. It serves it's purpose and all but you can tell it was made by someone without a lot of skill. I usually have other people build my cages simply because I KNOW they're better at it than me.
