Feeding My GTP

KenMc Jan 09, 2006 06:41 AM

I am going to feed my snake today. The breeder said that he is eating live pinkies. I would really like to get him on frozen. Should I try feeding him a frozen pinkie or should I just get him a live pinike, since he is still getting used to his environment. I just got him Saturday and the breeder said he feeds him every Monday or Tuesday.

For the first feeding, I would try what he's used to. If he has a good strong feeding response, I would switch over on the next feeding to f/t. Make sure when you do, that the mouse is well heated, or heat the nose on a lightbulb just before you offer to give it a good heat signature. Good luck on the first feeding.

I tried feeding him about an hour ago with a live pinkie and he didn't eat it. I held it in front of him for about 5 minutes and no response. Hopefully he'll eat later tonight when he comes out. At least my ball python finally ate after 5 weeks.

He might just need more time to adjust to his new home. After dark is usually the best time to try feeding. Mine are in hunting mode as soon as the lights go out. You might have to experiment with different times though. How old is the baby?

The snake is 2 months old. He actually ate last night around 9. I think I have to feed him after dark, his response was quick. I have to get used to hand feeding him. I'm not used to his speed yet LOL. I think I'll have no problem switching him to frozen. I'm gonna try that next week. I really want to handle him soon, but I know I can't handle him often. Can I try and handle him by the end of the week, or is it still way too early to do that? He seems sort of mild tempered. I handled him for a minute or so before I bought him.

If you're smart you'll feed with forceps so that you don't get tagged. Sometimes they'll strike at the stronger heat signature of your fingers if you're holding the mouse. As for handling, the reason we don't handle the babies much is that they are quite delicate and their spines are easily damaged. I think I've held mine in my hand about 3 times since I got him/her. Usually I just remove the perch it's on to take photos or clean and it will climb around on its' own. Then I can weigh it and measure if necessary, but otherwise I leave it alone. My older girl that's over a year is out at least once a week and sometimes more. She's very tame and likes to be out. She's very curious. Usually if I try to put her back, she crawls out the door on her own, or hangs out on the perch right by the door.
