Het pied male will not breed (

JM Jan 09, 2006 08:38 AM

I don't post often~ but often enough that many of you know I have a late 02 pair of het pieds that just will not breed for me. I'm sure of thier sexes~ I even double checked again yesterday (actually probed them which I have not done before~ (before I just popped for sperm plugs which the male has). They are plenty big (female is almost 2000 grams, male is almost 1200 grams). I've tried the male with the het female, and 5 different normals (this year and last year). Nothing. I've tried popping the plugs from an active male and rubbing them on a female. Nothing. I've tried putting the male in with an active male. Nothing.

I'm thinking of putting the male in with an active male and a female the active male has bred before~ and leaving him there for a couple days. What do you think?

what is your ambient temperature,at the very end of october i put my male with my females he bred all 3 1 time each and then went on breeding strike i was like WTH so i took them out of an ambient 81 degree room and put them in a fluctuating 74-76 degree room and in 1 month he has bred all 3 females at least 2 times each and the first day they were all put in the cooler room he was locked up by the next morning b4 i went to work and then i just ran him through the other 2, 2 weeks after that i re-cycled him through the 3 females and he locked up again 3 times in a row its a beautiful thing

JM Jan 09, 2006 09:25 AM

I can try that. I had not thought to fluctuate the ambient room temp~ just the day/night cycle drop. I have noticed that one of my two active males have not bred the females the last several times I put him with his girls. And it is warmer here right now (we had an 80F day recently). I'll try opening the window in the snake room for a few hours every day.

Thanks

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i dont know how warm or cold it is there but if it gets to low youll be looking at a possible RI. is your room controlled by a thermostat and heater if so lower your heat to 75 if not find the coolest room in the house within safe temps and move them there

JM Jan 09, 2006 09:48 AM

Moving them to another room would not be possible. We are talking about 5 racks~ and a LOT of snakes! LOL!

Don't worry~ I wasn't suggesting I would leave the window open in the snake room all day. What I meant to say was that I can open the window to bring in some cool air for a couple hours everyday. I'm in Southern Ca. We only use our house heat at night (and not in the snake room). The temps here are very mellow~ and I wasn't thinking of leaving the window open ALL day~ just for a few hours to let some of the cooler air into the room(66F outside right now at 7:30 in the morning)!!

Thanks for checking on that though. Your right~ If I planned to leave the window open all day and night~ or if I were in a cooler climate that would be a concern.

I have a male that would not breed - I tried pairing him with a female for a month and a half - nothing. I gave up and put the female with another snake and they bred all last month - just for the hell of it I put the first male in with her on Saturday and woke up Sunday to see them locked up. I had tried everything before; sperm plugs, sheds, spraying, changing temps, putting another male in with them - nothing worked. I guess he just wasn't ready. Whattayagunnado if they aint ready then they aint ready. Have you bred the female before? Maybe she is not receptive?

I've only got one expierienced female~ she is one of the females I have him rotating in with~ but I've seen no action. Maybe more time........I'm trying not to get upset and worried~ but the reason I only had ONE girl go last year was because the other 3 I thought could be ready last year (one 3000 gram girl) were put with this het pied male all season and he didn't breed with them.

Are you sure they're not breeding? I've had a number of clutches of eggs produced from couples that I've never witnessed breeding. Maybe he's just quick? Or likes to do it at 2:00 in the morning when everyone else is in bed? Just because you don't see it, doesn't mean he's not.

That is possible~ but I thats what I was hoping was happening last year. I paired this same male with three females last year. I only saw him lock up with ONE, ONCE on APRIL FOOLS DAY (I should have seen it coming right?) and I didn't get any eggs at all from any of those three girls last year.

If this is the second year this is happening why not pick up another male het? I am sure you could find a yearling male for a couple hundred dollars, and maybe it would mate for you.

I'm very seriously considering that very thing. I'm reluctant to do it though~ it's not that another male will cost too much (though I hate to blow the money when I have one that should be perfectly good!) It's the whole quarintine business. If I bought a new male I would need to use him before he could be properly quarintined. That would involve moving the females I want bred into a quarinine area away from the rest of my collection. (Which I"m not sure where would be good as I currently have a bunch of corns in my quarintine area~ and they are not ready to move out of quarintine yet).......AND it would involve REALLY trusting my source~ as my most valuable animal~ the 2000 gram het pied female~ would have to be exposed to the new male before he had completed quarintine.

And my male SHOULD be doing his job!!!!

I've put some thought into it. Still thinking about it.

Thanks
