New Pics, no hard questions

rick millspaugh Jan 09, 2006 10:04 AM

I was playing around with the new camera and got the best shots of this girl I gotten yet (IMHO); although they look dark on my work computer. Just thought I would share, no hard questions with this one.

Rick:

Beautiful snake and very nice pics. Your technique is growing! You can see how the depth of field improves as you change the angle of the shot (in your second pic)--more of the body is in focus as you reduce the focal distance from front to back. You can also improve that a bit more by increasing your distance from lens to snake by a few inches, then cropping in a photo-editing program. Happy shooting!

I’m still messing with different things. I used a shutter speed of 125 for these and let the camera set the apertures (as we discussed in the past). I think it was already too late in the day for good lighting though. The pictures seem too dark.

My real problem, is convincing my wife that all this photographing the snakes (and lizards) is just so I can figure out the camera. I need to know how to use it to get good family stuff, which is how I convinced her I, I mean “we”, needed a good camera to start with.

I’ll get some great ones some day. Now if I can just find instruction manuals with bigger print; sucks getting old.

Rick:

Just a suggestion...try using flash (and then you can shoot in low light conditions) with a diffuser (this can be as simple as tissue paper taped over the pop-up flash) to soften the light. Use aperture priority mode (set to largest number available), macro mode, and autofocus. See what happens! (I'm sure your wife will be impressed!)

Nice snake. Love the colors.
Belated Congratulations as well! Glad to see you won a "Best of Show" with your snake too.

I think the picture was taken through the screen top of the cage, not the best by any means. She did not win B.I.S. though, only “most unusual”. Several people (including me) were a little surprised. My wife beat me out with her bearded dragon that took 2nd BIS. She was a good sport though.

Rick,
What the heck is the picture of?
Awesome snake...

for posting a “non-mexicana” species. It was in response to Marks post. She is a Patternless Albino Nelson’s Milksnake. As far as I know, she is the only one in existence (so far). Her sister from this year is almost patternless but has a couple light band marks on her body close to her head. There is more info on them in the “milksnake forum”

...you dod not win B.I.S. is because I didn't get a vote!
One of the best I've ever seen.
The "splotchy" or "striped" ones that have an erratic/broken stripe and lots of other distractions do not appeal to me.
Yours is perfect.

I did that a few years ago, from room for a dozen adults to room for alot of adults (can't admit how many incase my wife sees this). What's amazing is I am already out of room.
