Tail Sheding

zugzug31 Jan 09, 2006 03:24 PM

I have a young snow, 4 months, that when it sheds it seems to shed a full shed except for the last 1/2 inch of its tail. I didnt notice this for a while, im new to this, and after a while it appeared that the left over sheds cut off circulation to the tip of the tail and it had fallen off. I took it to a vet and it is doing well except it still leaves the little bit of its tail unshed. I can remove the rest of it with a little water but was wondering if I will always have to do this or is there something I should change before it creates problems.

Thanks in advance,
Don

i had this same problem with one of my corns when it was little. it does get better as they get bigger. i just mist down my snakes when they are in shedding mode and esp when they clear and ready to shed. they ususally have a perfect shed.

all snakes can have this problem. just need to keep humidity up when they go into shed. even my 7 foot jungle carpet python didn't shed the very tip of his tail. i just wet it alittle and it comes right off. if you get it off soon after shedding it shouldn't be a problem. its when you leave it on in hopes it will come off on its own that is when it can cause a problem as you found out (if left on for long time)

just my exp with my 7 snakes.

I would agree. Mist when shedding and get a humidity gage. If it comes down to it, soak your snake for a bit in warm (not hot) water

I had this happen once as well....I just got a sponge, a new one, soaked with warm water. Squeezed the water out and gently rubbed the area with the unshed skin. Rub it from front to tip only since this is the direction it comes off in. This worked very well also.
