I've been told my several people now that I can house an adult Mali in a 20gallon long tank. Is this fine?

simple is best....NO! Kinda hope you're joking with that question. If not you're gonna wish you hadn't posted.
In a nutshell, no, that is not "fine." That is more akin to "awful." Don't know who the self-proclaimed authorities are who told you so but, would they also tell you how happy you'd be to live in a one room, 100 square ft apartment. Check the caresheets, check the caresheets, check the caresheets... Thanks for checking in for advice, though. Seriously, it's a good way to learn & exchange info even if you get ripped up in the process. Lord knows I do...

Well I dont think any care sheet that I've looked at really covered tank size. But this part is from experince, setting up the proper tempature gradient in a 20 long is impossible. The smallest size I would feel comfortable using is a forty breeder
Yes, a 40 gallon breeder is what is generally recommended on this site as a minimum tank size. It is impossible to get the proper temperature gradient in a 20 gallon long, also many of the malis like to wander around, and they just will feel like they are in a jail cell in a tank that small. This forum is full of very knowledgable people, so feel free to ask any questions you have, but it is always a good idea to do a search first to see if there have been any recent discussions on the topic to get you started!
Welcome!
