Is it common for male to stay after POS?

AbsoluteApril Jan 09, 2006 08:15 PM

Hey forum,

it's been a while!
I've got a question, is it normal for a male boa to stay with a female after her POS? The male was introduced back in October and has been busy courting ever since. I saw a lot of the normal signs, she did the twist, swell, got dark, etc and just shed this morning. Everything seems pretty by the book, however the male is still on her. He continues to follow her around the cage, resting on her no matter where she is. His tail and body are just wrapped loose around her and he stays with her.
Could it be that he is just inexperienced or overly excited and doesn't know when to stop? If it wasn't for the male's behavior, I'd say the female is gravid (90% sure).
This is the first breeding for both of these snakes, female is a 1998 and male is a 2001. Thanks for any opinions or help!

I'll leave my males in for a little bit after they have lost interest just to be sure. If I saw a male going after a female......I'd leave him in.
Take care sister.

Hey John!

Yeah, I decided to leave him in there. I pulled him out and he struggled and struggled trying to reach back to her.. so I just let him go and said "have fun and treat her right" This morning he was going strong, full courting (maybe breeding?) with tail waving action and all. I'm just going to keep my fingers (and toes) crossed.
Thanks (and nice to still see some familiar faces on the forum!)
Take it easy,
April

I have had a few males, over the past several years exhibit this type of behavior even when all the visual, and behavioral cues from the female said "hey skippy,I'm done already!" in these cases I try to leave the males in,even though it's sometimes difficult,(I find myself feeling kind of apathethic for the females after a while.) in three distinct cases in the recent past these females had another completely separate, and distinct ovulation, and I ended up feeling glad that I left them together! I'm glad to hear that male is working hard for you,the results should be well worth the effort. my current email is linked at the bottom of this post, drop me a line anytime! there are a few things I think you might like to see. I don't get much time to post anymore, but I still check in now & then. hope all else is well, talk to ya soon..."R"...

Hi Tim!

Glad to hear from you! The male's doing great and still going crazy on Zahara, so all seems like it's headed in the right direction. I did leave him in there with her... he's a little champ! I'll write you an email later when I get home with more info! Talk to you soon,
April

my last post on jan 5 here was a similar question and jeremy stone gave me a good answer back then.
my male and female bred from the first of november and she (ovulated)and 19 day,s later she shed (POS)
she refused her first meal after her shed and the next day i put my male back in he was all over her again and is still trying to breed with her today.
i just don,t know if she,s allready gravid or that HE don,t understand that he has done the job allready.
i will leave him with her just incase.

hope you can find the post off jan 5 of mine and see the reply that jeremy stone gave me

goodluck with all

thanks for the heads up, I found the post and reply from Jeremy. It's amazing how these animals make us wonder and are always showing new/different behavior! I will post again if anything new happens...
I wonder if they have the two seperate ovulations, will there be two POS? Very interesting! Good luck with your pair!
