what is the record size for a ball python?

SnakeGrrl Jan 10, 2006 01:06 AM

Does anyone know what the record size is for Ball Pythons? I was noticing how big my girl was and it got me thinking about it.

I have had her for about 11 or 12 years now I think, and she was a big wc import when I got her (she was my first snake, I didn't really know any better!) I love her to death, she is a real sweety.

I measured her at just shy of 5 feet and according to my digital bathroom scale (which may or may not be trustworthy) she is 6.6 lbs. That's what, about 3000 grams? I'm tempted to take her to the vet to get a more accurate weight on her, just for fun.

Is that big for a Ball Python? She sure seems beefier than any I have seen, but I am no expert on the species...

Just curious! Thanks

Six feet four inches is the record that I have heard with a corresponding weight of close to 5500 grams.

i think she layed like 16-19 eggs if im not mistaken the picture i saw of him holding her hes like 7 - ft tall and this snake was like 3/4 of his height and she was thicker than cold grits.she got my vote for the largest female ive ever seen. also on the DR.Seward ball python video Dan and Colette sutherland (The Snake keeper) had a MASSIVE female also but they never told her weight they just showed her going back into her tub she was awesome also

that is in the 6100 gram range. Laid 18 eggs last year.

Be prepared for the following sorts of responses:

-I’ve got one that is 9000 grams, but I’ve never actually weighed it and no one else has ever seen it.

-I know someone who knows someone who’s best friend’s uncle had one in 1970 that was 9 feet long and ate adult rabbits.

-Tom Crutchfield had one that was the biggest I’ve ever seen, at least 8 feet long, and it ate rabbits.

-I know for sure that somebody’s big female laid 24 eggs last year and they all hatched. She must be huge.

-Someone’s importing lots of those really big ones from between the two mountain ranges where they get to be 8 feet long.

Somehow the monsters always seem to shrink when the tape measure and scale appear. But it's always a fun topic to kick around. I think the fact that you’ve had your animal for over 11 years is pretty great in itself. I’d bet not too many people on this forum could say the same. And she sounds good-sized, too.

I was curious, since 90% of the BP's I deal with are barely more than 3.5-4 feet.

I swear, I love this snake. She got me into herp keeping, and is the easiest, most hardy captive. I guess she never bothered to read the books that say BP's are picky (and I have had that experience with others) and has eaten anything I put in front of her.

I have bred her only a couple times in all the years I have had her and had 9 eggs twice and 10 eggs once. She was actually the first snake I ever bred as well. It was very rewarding!

Anyways, have a good day everyone

Maybe that's the photo I have on file. I saved one from the forum some time ago of a 1500g male with an 8500g female. It's amazing. The male looks like a hatchling compared to the female. I love the photo. (And of course, I have to take the OPs word on the weights.)
