Measurement

phiber_optikx Jan 10, 2006 04:52 AM

I just measured Hope using Serpwidgets. Does 30" seem large for an 05......? Granted she is a VERY early 05 (bought in April @ 12" So theoretically she could be bred in 6". But I wouldn't do that for obvious health reasons. But do you think at this growth rate she would be safe to breed in 07 given that she is in good health?

I have an 05 (august) that is pushing 20 inches...so it may not be beyond reason that an early 05 could be 30 inches. Just reflects on good husbandry practices if you ask me!!

I have been told that there are three requirements to breeding. Three years old, 300 in weight, and I am sorry, but the last "three" slipped my mind. Inches maybe. It is in a previous post though. I would think if the snake is big enough, healthy enough, fat enough to deal with the stress, it would be ok. I know that if you breed too soon, it can stunt the female's growth, but if she will be big enough by the time you breed her, that should not be a problem. The only other thing you would have to worry about would be, her becoming egg bound. Hope this helps

Are you sure she's not a late 04?

Anyway I guess it depends on if you bought her as a pet or as a breeder. If you got her as a breeder than you could just go ahead and try, worst that would happen is she dies. Besides corn snakes are cheap (sarcasm).

Personally I would wait 1 more year as you already have her good sized, and spent the money to feed her, no reason to lose her because you didn't wait. Besides It's fun to breed em' but no fun to lose em'

First of all I agree 100%. But at this rate she will be around 4' at around 2 years. If she is close to 4' you would still recomend waiting?

i've have read that weight is the only factor that really needs to be considered. 300 grams is the minimum. and not really fatty, it needs to be muscle. if you have an overweight snake she will have trouble laying the eggs. which can lead to egg binding. this is only what i have read though. NOT MY EXPERIENCES. they also say breeding will not stunt the growth. most of this came from past conversations in the kingsnake forum but i would imagine the same for corns.

April's very early in the year for corn hatchlings. I have to ask along with the other poster if maybe she wasn't a very late 04 baby and just wasn't sold.

In any case it look like you have a nice big girl there. Some snake are just good growers. I'd wait until she was 3 years old to breed her tho. It's much better to get the extra maturity on her.
