Baytril? Feedback requested

dawnrenee2000 Jan 10, 2006 09:29 AM

I am doing some research on Baytril ,and would like to have some of you give me some feedback on this. The more information and opinions the better I think if they are based on experiences.

I have come across some very negative statements about the use of Baytril injections being given subcutaneously. I have read about it causing skin/scale tissue to die leaving the snake scarred and discolored, and that it was actually designated to be used intramuscular instead of SC to avoid tissue damage.
AND I have also read that it is damaging to the kidneys.

I have also read statements from people saying its worked great for them with no ill effects and that they use it commonly for any type of Bacterial Infections.

So please tell me;

How has Baytril worked for you?
Any bad side effects?
Has it been succesful?

Thanks for your input.
Dawn

Good topic and, yes, Baytril will discolor red and black scales when injected SC. Tip: hit the white bands when poss.
As far as effectivity, the snakes recovered from surgery/trauma and are thriving now but excessive dosage will have an effect on kidneys from what I read. Be sure the snake/patient can find and use the waterbowl and assure the dosage is correct at 5mg/Kg as a standard bacteriostat. Not more than 10 mg/Kg for resistant infections.
All for now, Jeff

thanks for your reply. I too think this is an important topic where feedback from people can help others in making the best decisions for the well being of their animals. I look forward to hearing others experiences as well.
