Mealworms

Chamlvr420 Jan 10, 2006 10:52 AM

Has anyone on here had thier mealworms go to the pupa stage? I researched it on the net and was just wondering if the darkling beetle would be a good food source for chams. Can someone help me out cause i have 6 pupas right now and was thinking of starting a beetle colony.

The beetles are often ignored as a food by lizards, I don't think they contain much "Meat" either. I suggest letting them lay eggs.

If you feed them good healthy moisture foods, they will lay eggs and should produce healthy mealwormies. They are thursty when tehy become the beatle, and will lay more eggs if you provide a bit of carrot and etc.
I have a small tub that I havent fed, but is slowing growing over the last two months. I should feed the beetles more often though. They would produce more.

So then the ratio of worms to beetles shouldn't be to much of a factor then? What about using a large size cricket keeper instead of a rubbermaid tub? Should there be some kind of substrate in the container?

I have used margarine containers. It really doesn't matter. Mine are curently in a ceramic tube.

Search for "Mealworm care sheets" there are tons of great resources.

Thanks to the both of you for all the help. I'll let you know how it goes i decided to start this because a batch that i had purchased from a local pet store had been kept around out of the fridge for awhile and i ended up with 5 pupas so i figured i'd give it a go...save a little money on feeding...maybe someday i'll get ambitious and breed my own crikets...but not anytime soon.
