Taking a beardie out of brumation ??? PLEASE HELP !!!

xxradxx Jan 10, 2006 11:19 AM

I purchased two young male dragons about two months ago and housed them in an out door enclosure. Shortly after they arrived the temps dropped alot and one of them went into brumation but, the other didn't. I think they were about 3 months old when I got them so the one that didn't has grown alot, but the other hasn't (as far as I can tell). Basically I want him to keep growing so he will reach his maximum possible size, so does anyone know if I can take him out of brumation by moving him inside and raising his temps ?? Has anyone tried before ? Is it safe ? Would it be better to let it happen naturally ?
Thanks a Million
Alex

Hi
r both male togheter?
then separete them then it could be stressed out from the other .
if they already housed separete ,i would bath him once a day and put him under basking spot.
also raise the temp on hotspot round 110-115 .
make the days longer round 14 houres light a day.
if that not help let him go some times if they wanna go into brumation you cant do any thing .

Thanks for the reply ! They are housed together in 4'x2.5'x2' enclosure, but I will be separating them shortly. The thing I really wanna know is, since he has been in brumation for a couple weeks...is it safe to take him out this soon ???
Thanks

Bruamtion typically lasts 2-4 months but some take longer or some take less time. The best way to take t hem out of brumation (if they even 'listen' LOL) is to gradually raise the basking /cage temperature and increase the length of daylight, typically about half an hour every week till you are back to 14 hour days. The basking temp and ambient cage temperature can be raised to optimal temps either slowly or at once. After doing this, it is typicall up to your dragon to decide he is ready to come out of brumation.

Once the lights are on 14 hours a day, if he doesn't come out on his own, you can try taking him out of whereever he is sleeping and putting him on his basking spot and see if he stays there. Offer a light meal of easy to digest foods (ie silkworms, butterworms, small horn worms, some crickets and a small salad) to get him to eat. A bath is good to help hydrate him after a long sleep, though I don't think I will recommend just taking him right out of brumation and into a bath, he may not be awake enough to keep his head out of the water.

did you say they are three months old? typically they don't really brumate the first winter. so "wakeing him up" shouldn't be as difficult as, say a 4 year old dragon. you should seperate them until he's awake. wake him by putting him under the basking spot and leave him alone for a couple hours. then see if he'll eat. if you notice that he is eating more and more each day then you are doing well.

it takes a couple of days for a dragon to reach the deep sleep that they reach when they are brumating. and therefore, it usually takes a couple of days for them to snap out of it (and start scratching the sides of the cage again......LOL).

i think that in your case, with a 3 month old dragon, he is not brumating but stressed from the other dragon.

rule #56 for keeping more than one dragon in a (large) cage is females are more likely to get along....males will fight to the death. keep in mind that 80% of dragons are not capable of coexisting regardless to the sex.
