Cribo breeding question.......

bthacker Jan 10, 2006 11:21 PM

Hey fellas......This post may make some of you "brown tail" haters happy...LOL
Quick question.....My Cribos hooked up and copulated back on the 6th of December. Do the females always have a pre-lay shed and if they do, should my female already have had hers? It is well over thirty days. She looks large in her lower extremities but I have a feeling she may have "fizzled" out. I was reading the Indigosnakes.com info on there and going by that my female is a bit late. Do some females retain sperem and hold a bit longer to develope eggs??

Any info wold be appreciated.

Thanks-

Brett

yeah brett, dry's do go thru a pre-lay shed though not in 30 days. ie, my uni's start breeding around labor day but never lay till mid march. are they retaining sperm? i don't know but breeding is much more ardent in the 1rst month or so & then drops off to zero by january. also, gravid females will utilize a lamp now & then, turning their bellies towards the warmth for short periods......

Thanks Dan......From what you are saying then she could be gravid. That is a long stretch from breeding to egg laying. How long do the eggs take to hatch? 70-80 days?

Hatch time is temprature dependant the hotter they are the sooner they hatch the cooler they are the later they hatch. In Indigo temprature above 80F has been associated with animals being born with spinal kinks but I am not the athority.

brett, i've always kept uni eggs on a shelf @ 78* or slightly less & they would take on average 115 days. i remember last year some guys hatching out other subs in less than 90 days though at the same approx. temp! why the difference, i don't know but they are worth the wait......

bthacker Jan 12, 2006 10:45 AM

I need to get the eggs first!!! I think she is gravid and if she is I don't mind the wait. I probably would let them incubate at just above room temperature. 15-20 days difference won't make a difference if they all don't come out, right?

Thanks guys for your help!!

you're right brett, what's a couple more weeks? one just has to be patient & leave them alone, no artificial pipping, etc. sometimes it can be a week between the first ones appearence till the last to show up, just let it ride. if you have good eggs, they'll get it done on their own in their own time. good luck! btw, having really small f/t pinks [red hots] on hand will help alleviate the frustration of fussy eaters, of which you'll have some. i had a female hatchling in 01 that took 234 days till she ate voluntarily! i thought i was gonna die......:>/

In Spilotes every degree lower adds about ten days.

BT, she won't lay for 100 days!!! So, yo're looking at March before worrying about a "pre-lay" shed!!!
