Oh, no! My 2nd male ig is entering his breeding season!

Flavia Guimaraes Jul 24, 2003 10:46 PM

Godzilla my 7 years old male iguana is having a very bad breeding season.Since January he is attacking everyone that comes close to him or close to his cage. He is banging his nose on his cage's walls trying to attack everyone/everything.It has been very difficult to me to keep his nose injuries clean because the last time i tried to treat his snout he bit me hard (i almost lost 2 of my fingers!lol). Now, my second male iguana , TREX, around 3 years old, probably less, and almost 5 feet long (yes, he is HUGE for his age!) is starting to show the same symptoms! He turned orange,he is walking sideways, whipping his tail like a snake and headbobing at me like crazy! He is not attacking us yet but if he follows Godzilla example he will do that soon!
So i'll probably need to ground him in his cage for months too, like i m still doing with Godzilla!!!!

My iguana Dexter is beginning to show breeding signs as well! This is too early!!! I can only hope its not as bad as last year (October-February)... He started turning orange about a month ago, but now his eating has dropped off, and he is starting to pick fights with my Yellow Nape Amazon. Fortunately, he hasn't given me any trouble yet (other than when he is in his enclosure, which is HIS, or I make the mistake of wearing a green shirt...). He has been spending more time stomping around my apartment, obviously restless. And he has been leaving small poops around which he doesn't normally do (he is normally good about doing this in the bathroom). He also did this last year before breeding season... I guess its coming up soon!!! Aaaaack!!!! I still remember last year's too vividly...

Good luck!!!

No, you are not alone. I'm currently housing 8 adult male iguanas and it seems like breeding season never ends around here. The largest male, Mohammad, who is almost 6 foot and weighs about 18 pounds, is in full blown season and charges me as soon as I get within 6 feet of his enclosure. Feeding him is an adventure daily and I have to clean his enclosure at night while he's sleeping.

Wow! A six feet ig charging you is frightening!

Sometimes i wonder why people want their ig to grow very big!

Im afraid Godzilla will never be normal again.Do you think its possible that a breeding season lasts forever?

in one way you are lucky, your igs are happy and healthy enough to go into season. sometimes i wish zephyr would go from a cuddle ig to a in season ig just so i knew he was healthier!

Only healthy igs have breeding season?I didnt know that!!!

sarahadele Jul 25, 2003 07:47 PM

I wouldnt say only healthy igs...but for example my zephyr is 3 and a half and has never had a breeding season. he has kidney disease and has improved since i got him but will never be a good healthy iguana. he uses his energy for healing more then thinking about making baby igs. he is in the 4 months ive had him the sweetist iguana ive ever met, and ive had times where i wonder if he is a girl, and i hop online to learn more about gender distinction. im sure you could have sick igs who are still holy terrors and go from maniac to physotic during season, despite illness...but if Zephyr went into season it would be for me a good sign that hes healthier!

why does she has kidney disease?His/her previous owner used to give him/her too much protein?Im happy he/she is with you now!

thanks he is 3 and a half years old. his first owner got tired/bored of him and left him at the petstore (ironically, we ran into her at the same petstore a few months ago..i wonder if she recognized her cast off pet!) my friends parents, who have ball pythons and a chameleon (its a cham...in a 10g aquarium..and they leave live mice in the snake cage all the time so they can snack if hungry..and keep the snakes on reptile bark...some other questionable care) and other reptiles, bought him, brought him to the vet to have hia abcess removed (i can see the small scar on his face) and then intended to adopt him out. they never really made an effort, just kinda decided they werent keeping him but never advertised or anything. meanwhile he lived in a 55gallon tank, with lizard litter, only a heat lamp at day and a red heat lamp at night(which he was always under, as much of his body he could fit) and they fed him dog food and rarely bathed him, etc. i found out about him because im very good friends with their daughter, and they gave him to me. his bloodwork came back with calcium 47, phosphorus 22, etc..the vet said poor prognosis and so we give him as much fluids and correct care as we can. he doesnt like to eat on his own (occasionally he trys to eat a red strawberry or red pepper) so he gets syringe fed 4-5 times a day and has his regular salad always available to him in whole and chopped form..although i do think hed starve himself to death before eating, i tried to not give in but he got too skinny and was already skinny to begin with, so syringe feeding puts meat on his bones...in a manner of speaking with his regular salad-all blenderized up. he also gets 1-3 soaks a day in his bathtub, and when he isnt bathing in the warm bath he is either outside sunning in the floridian sun or inside roaming his bathroom. hes my darling and i wouldnt trade him for the world. right now hes in his dog/towel bed, under my bathroom cabinet, asleep...
