CWD & Snake?

Breeze007 Jan 11, 2006 10:51 AM

Hi All

I know that it could be fatal to mix different breeds of Lizard together, but what about a CWD and a Snake? A lady who works in my local reptile store was mentioning today that she kept a Desert Dragon and a Cornsnake together in the same enclosure and they get along fine. I didn't really think about it until I got home so didn't have a chance to ask her about it. Any thoughts/suggestions/advice on this?

I'm not sure what a "Desert Dragon" is. The only thing I can think of is a bearded dragon. And I would definately say no to this. Mixing baslisk, water dragons, and australian water dragons has been said to be okay. But mixing a snake and a water dragon could definately be fatal for either party. If the lizard is a baby, it probably won't last long. If the lizard is an adult Water Dragon, the snake would end up with claw slashes and maybe bite marks.

Not to mention Water Dragons and Cornsnakes have completely different environments and lighting needs. I am guessing she was talking about bearded dragons. And if she was refering to a bearded dragon or an australian water dragon. But if she called it a desert dragon, she probably didn't know what she was talking about.

Thanks Bryan. I must say that I didn't think it was a good idea, and was going to wait until my Water Dragon had outgrown his enclosure, but when I heard the lady say about her dragon and snake together, it just got me thinking. My dragon is a baby and I wasn't thinking particularly of a cornsnake because I know they are from a desert environment, but one that didn't grow too big and from the same environment as the Water Dragon. My daughter has been on at me from a very young age for a snake and what did I go and do? I acquired a Water Dragon instead! HeHeHe He is very much loved and spoilt rotten, but she's still hounding me for a snake. Oh well, I guess she is gonna have to either wait a little bit longer, or save her pennies.

Thanks again :-}

Well, Water Dragons require large enclosures as adults, as I am sure you already know. If not, adult water dragons really need a 5 x 4 x 2 - 6 x 5 x 3 enclosure (in feet). I still think your water dragon would go after the snake, they eat - or try to eat - anything that moves.

I know its not a good idea to keep different kinds of the same animals together (one type of gecko with another type) let alone animals that are not the same species. I know that even if there are not immediate problems, some animals get stressed out. Some will stop feeding, or what ever because of it. I would not suggest keeping even different types of snakes, geckos or lizards together and definitely a mix of those. As mentioned before, they have different requirements.

Thanks guys for all the info. I pretty much knew it wasn't going to be possible, it's just that someone had mentioned to me that they DO keep lizards and snakes in the same enclosure.

I have decided against the thought so don't worry, I won't be on here in a few weeks asking for advice on how to handle snake and lizard problems :-} I will however be getting another water dragon but I need some advice, so I will start another thread for that.

Thanks again guys :-}
