Cricket Box Problems and Q.s???

JustinM. Jan 11, 2006 08:01 PM

OK...I'm having a few problems?

My cricket box is really starting to smell and I'm looking for ideas on how to change up my set up?

- I'm using rabbit pellet as my substrate.

- I use the water crystals as my water source.

- I ran out of a dry cricket feed and I'm presently using vegetables/fruit for food.

I have been finding the crystals are mixing with feces and the veggies/fruit are soiling the pellet layer. How can I set up a cricket box for 1,000 crickets with the least amount of maitenance??? Does anyone have pics of their set ups?

My current box is a large Rubbermade container with the lid's middle taken out and screen cover nailed to the lid. There is plenty of air circulation; but, I am having a problem with odor. Any help? I appreciate everyone's input!

- Justin

I don't use any substrate, just enough egg crates for hides. If you're feeding veggies and fruit to them you don't have to provide additional water. Put crix' food on the paper plate, it will keep it from mixing up with staff in the box, plus it's easy to change for fresh food. If you put big enough slices they won't be dragging them around the set up. Do not use stirofoam plates, they'll be chowing those. I also find that empty paper towel and toilet paper rolls provide good hides and easy to feed from, just shake some out, no chasing required. Hope it helps.
