Dog Food recall and effects on feeders

snakesunlimited1 Jan 11, 2006 08:36 PM

I was wondering if anybody saw the recall of Diamond Pet foods. As far as I can tell they are a distributor of dog and cat foods with a product line of over 2,700. I didn't go through any of them but thought that maybe those of you that breed your own feeders might want to. The food is causing liver failure in dogs. Food chain style it might mess with your snakes.

Just a thought.

Then the tainted dogfood ought to kill the small rodents well before they are fed to the snakes. If there are no signs that my rodent colonies are affected, then I doubt there is any danger to my snakes.

I use Safeway Tasty Nuggets, Purina packages it.

Well yeah if they die first no problem as long as you don't feed them off. I don't know how long it takes for them to die or if the small size of the rodents would speed the death up. Basically check your food if your rodents start acting weird. I found a list of what they are claiming was affected. Google Diamond pet food if you want to see more. I just thought this may affect some herpers in a round about way so I would put it out there.

Hi Kerby, I checked their website and they did not ship to Arizona, they shipped product to mostly eastern states and Europe.

Also, it was mostly with high line diets(high protein/low fat) and as you know, mice need a low protien/high fat diet.

Also I bet it does not effect mice and snakes. If I remember correctly its flaxovirus or some such thing. Which I believe is very common in nature. It grows on wet rotting grains. It would be interesting to see if it effects rodents. Cheers FR

I've been saying that for years and everyone else assumes the opposite.

Fat is energy and those little high reving motors need lots of energy, simple as that. Limit their energy and you will lose offspring and lose breeders, particularly in winter when they actually need to make heat as well as those other processes to keep them babies alive. Cheers FR

I have a colony of breeder mice and just started rats this year. I have to stop during the summer every year because the heat kills them. I admit that I have most in aquariums with screen lids, so not a lot of ventilation, but last year I tried a fan for each, blowing air directly in. I can not afford those expensive breeding racks. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have to keep the animals outside because they would just stink up my house way too much. I also live in Cali, where it gets 100 . Any suggestions would be appreciated

Why not just build your racks out of 2x4s, way cheaper than anything someone manufactures.
