Stunted iguana

xris Jan 11, 2006 09:34 PM

I recently acquired an iguana from a family who did not want him anymore. They said he was about seven years old. He's very small, maybe 3 feet stl.

I've put him on a proper diet and am building him a seperate habitat apart from my other iguana. He's also taking a trip to the veterinarian next week. My question is: will he ever grow?

7 yrs old and three feet??? That sound an awful small for that age... even for a female. That iguana must be extremely malnourished and with possibly MBD to be that small at that age... heck, it probably could not have reached that age under such poor condition!

Chances are it is younger than people told you.
Anyways, reptiles in general never cease to grow. They grow 'til the day they die. Of course, with age the growth increases with fractions.

Once the iguana checks out ok, and is brought back to ideal captive and living conditions, it should regain some size and length. IF it is true that the animal is 7 years old... it'll grow very little, even if fed well, because of its age. However, if it is actually younger than told, cances are it might gain a foot after a year or two.

Good luck with it,

He may have MBD or an abscess. I can't tell. I've never had to deal with either issue. Looking at pictures online, it looks more like mbd. He didn't have a UV light or anything.

He seems to be fairly tame. He's eating well and is easily handled. He's put on a bit of weight already.

I had an adult male that was SVL 7 inchs at 7 years old. He came here at around 2 years after being fed a combination of marijuana and iceberg. I nursed him thru many a year of off feeding and he lived to be 8. He never grew more than 2.5 inchs.

He probably will not grow a whole helluva alot. I would also arrange a vet visit with full blood panel as soon as possible along with a fecal. You need to know what you are up against as soon as possible.
