I own two water dragons right but would like to get somthing diffrent. I would like to get a tegu but i dont know what kind to get. Im wondering whats the smallest tegu and eases to tame. I would probley get one as a juvenile and im wondering if i can put it into a big cage right away. And how big of a cage do you need.
If anyone could help me out that would be great!

Honestly, I have noticed this forum is not extremely active. I would do your research on the net, maybe talk to some of the breeders in your area or wait for the next reptile show to come around. I just bought a golden tegu at the last show and did not ask any info. Since then, I have read that they are the most grumpy tegu out there. I am doing ok with him, but he does not get along with my boyfriend very well. Sorry I could not tell you more. Maybe read some of the previous posts, check the archive. I know there is some helpful info farther back. I also know the minimum size of cage is huge, depending on the tegu. I currently have mine in a 40/50 gal long, but he is just a baby. I will custom build one when he gets bigger. Hope some of this helped. Good luck.

i've got a columbian and two argentinian reds. at first i liked the columbian, but now i am disappointed in him. the reds are great. i would advise buying either a blue or a red or an argentine black and white. ur gonna need space. u might think about converting a large walkin closet or a half bath into an vivarium. the reds and argentine black and whites can be kept outside in a large pen if u live in a southern state. that is a big plus with these lizards they are much more cold tolerant than most big lizards. this is more important than u might think. the white throat and black throat monitors are very popular monitor lizards that share a lot of good points with tegus. they r not cold tolerant though. a cold snap where u let the temperatures drop a little too low at night will destroy your pets in a flash, not so with your trusty cold tolerant tegus. even though i have a large living area for my tegus, i'm constantly letting them out to roam even taking them outside. these animals care in some ways is more like a small dog or a medium size cat then most lizards.
