Western Massasuaga Rattle snake in January

survey33 Jan 12, 2006 12:28 AM

Got a call today at work from one of the maintenance shops (on an Army base) about a Diamondback and hoping my office (Range Control) could remove it.

Turned out to be a young (yearling?) Western Massasuaga Rattler. I thanked the mechanics for not killing it and took it to the field to be released. Amazing that it would be out this time of year, but then we have had some freaky weather lately, about 70 today.

I found an Eastern massasauga in February before in Michigan on an unseasonably warm day. It was lying near a log that I figured it was hibernating under. They will sometimes move up if the conditions are right (in winter).

We are having a very mild winter here this year. I've been looking for my first herp and thought I would get one yesterday at 45*F, but still too much ice and snow. It was warm again today, so it might not be long...haha.

Nice pic, I wish I had camera with me. I'm originally from Michigan and remember seeing a couple of Eastern Massasaugas at Independence Oaks park (Oakland county).

I'm from Oakland Co. myself and am quite familiar with the Metro Parks system. I left to teach in Northern MI, 19 yrs. ago. Kinda miss that area. My Feb.'sauga was seen near Lake Vorheiss in the northeast of that county. Good luck in OK.
