Whitsided Blackratsnake X Whitesided Everglades

BLUEROSY Jul 25, 2003 12:57 AM

I know that some will frown upon this but I thought I would show this pic anyway. The whitesided gene is allelic between the two spp. This is my third year breeding them. I have two beautiful female Blackratsnakes that I got from George Miskimmon and I use them to breed to a male Ghost Glades (aka Whitesided Everglades)every year. They grow up more washed out with hints of yellow.

At least you label them as such. The real frowning comes upon those that consider (label) the herp what they want it to be instead of what it is. Either for economical reasons or just a personal ego boost.

All herps have their place in this hobby (or for many, this business)provided they are labeled correctly. Only fair for future hobbyists to know what they are working with.

I am at least glad to see you have no issues with being sincere in your projects. Hopefully your CB herps will go into the hands of people with the same sincerity or we could possibly end up with some new black rat or glades morphs years from now.

Well what I thought was interesting was the fact these two seperate animals shared the same recessive gene. What are the chances of that? What does this mean? I have heard that the WS Blackrat was created from the Ghost Glades yrs ago and bred back to the Blackrat. I don't accept this theory since I met the founder of the WS blackrat (Miskimmon) but one that I have heard none the less.
As far as a watered down version resulting of this cross being bred to a pure Ghost or Licorice that is always possible. But you would be able to tell the difference (IMO).
But a new morph of Whitesided Everglades or Whitesided Blackrat that would come from this breeding? I don't see a "new" morph being created unless you add another ingredient.

Yes, very true but I did not want to re-hash all the rumors. The thought years ago was just that. Many said if it was so you could probably prove it by breeding a ghost glades together with a licorice stick and the young would hatch out whitesided. If this thought was/is correct you have proved it true. Who knows though as I am rusty with genetics and have not given this serious thought. I'm sure many have though and will probably elaborate for me in this thread.

In regards to a new morph coming out of such a thing ,my point, which I probably was not clear in making was that such a mix will most probably get into someones ghost glades or licorice stick line eventually either intentionally or by accident. With throw back genes and all who knows what could eventually come out leading someone to think they have something new for the subspecies when all they have is a hybrid. Just my view of course.

To each his own but I am glad to see you state what they are prior to selling them. I do still hope the hands they go into are as sincere in representing any offspring they get from them as you are.

So I imagine that the WS gene would be the same in both subspecies.

Very pretty.
