I have a 1 and a half year old male cornsnake that is only 17 inches long. I've kept him on pinkies because that's all he can really swallow, but he can still swallow fuzzies. should I bump him up to fuzzies?

You'd be surprised what a snake can get down its throat. My yearlings are on hoppers. I was told to get them off pinkies as soon as possible because pinkies have very little nutrition because they are basically skin and bones. Fuzzies have more meat to them. But, like in the previous post, it depends on the size of the snake. Try a small fuzzy and see how the snake handles it. If he regurgitates, or the bulge is too big and looks stressful, go back to pinkies. That is just what I think.

If he can take fuzzies feed him fuzzies. Remember they can swallow things 1-11/2 times their size. My corn went from hatchling to huge in 8 months flat. She ate her first mouse Friday but it left a lump a little to large for my liking. Hee is a then and now of her.

Don't get me wrong, I love her dearly! She is my first snake and my personal favorite. I think she is a gorgeous snake now too. I just think she was an adorable baby. Kind of like a kitten....

Just messing with you. Corn snakes go from cute and adorable to beautiful. I have not seen any corn snake that is just ugly. Ya, I have seen some drab ones that are just boring, but can anyone show me a picture of an Ugly corn snake?

The general rule of thumb when feeding corn snakes is that the widest part of the food item should be about equal to the thickest part of the snake's body. They can eat items larger than that, but for easy digestion, this is the proper size.

You may want to have that snake checked out by a vet. Sounds like it might have malnutrition, hypothyroidism or parasites.
My little girl exceeded 17 inches within the 1st month and a half I had her.
That does sound very small for a snake that old. I have noticed from personal experience, if you do not feed snakes frequently enough or keep them on undersized meals, also not frequently enough, they just don't grow very fast. A vet check would not hurt, though.

If he can and will take fuzzies, move him up to fuzzies.

I have a 6 month old corn that has been eating fuzzies for a month now. He is almost 18 inches and shedding almost every 5-6 weeks. How often do you feed him? Mine eats every 4-5 days and is kept w/ 75-85 degree temps. The bulge disapears in about a day and he is out crawling around and "hunting" again in 4 days.
It amazes me how fast they grow! I've got 3 corns that are now all eating fuzzies. One of them is over 20 inches long and could possibly eat 2 fuzzies each meal-time (every 5 days) now. After eating 1, it seems to be hunting after 2 days.
The other two (a normal and an amel/albino) are about 17 inches long, eat a fuzzy every 5 days and look like they're hunting after only 3 days.
I've often been tempted to feed them again when they start hunting, but don't want to waste any more mice. Been there, done WAY TOO MUCH of that! LOL.

Why do you assume it's hunting, just because it's moving around. Snakes spend most of their time looking for a way out of their enclosures.
