Scale coloration

officert Jan 12, 2006 10:23 PM

Being a new owner of a BP, I am not fully familiar with all aspects of this new snake. I was currious if some BP's have a naturally irodecent coloration to them. I have been told that this happens before they shed, but his eyes have not become clowdy and i have had him for almost a month now and he still "shimmers." Anyone have any ideas.

There is a lot of variation in the sheen of ball python skin among individual normal animals.

In general, ball pythons coloration will dull and darken previous to a shed. The eyes will also become cloudy blue. Just before the shed (usually a day or two) the eyes will clear.

After the shed the new skin often has a very irridecent appearance.

How often the snake sheds will depend a great deal on how fast it's growing. If it's an older snake it will generally shed less often than younger animals.

Hope this helps.

well he is a 4mo old male, and is yet to shed(that is since I have owned him). I am acutally really looking forward to see him after a shed to see how "fresh" scales look. Thanks for the relpy
