Mini Mealworms

bast Jan 13, 2006 07:37 AM

Hello all,

I have soem hatchling bearded dragons. I was thinking of ordering some of the mini melaworms that I've seen advertised in Reptiles Magazine. Are they just small mealworms or another species? Any benefits from them?

What are your thougths and/or experiences?

Thank you,

Brian

The mini mealworms are a completely different species than mealworms. Though I haven't used them myself, I really don't think they are as good as they claim. Considering the cost difference I think it would be better to stick with pin head crickets for hatchling bearded dragons or small silkworms (quarter to half inch silks should be fine with hatchling bearded dragons due to their very soft bodies and lack of any hard chitin). Another thing about the mini mealworms is they still have the rather tough chitin which isn't easily digested by baby bearded dragons. The fact they are only about a quarter inch in length and so small, alot does get eaten which really does increase the feeding bill.

I haven't seen or heard of any nutritional facts about the mini mealworms, to even guess if they do have a higher protein/calcium level or a good balance between calcium and phosperous content. High phospherous content, especially if higher than the amount of calcium, isn't good for bearded dragons.

I have purchased them twice, but found them very had to pick out of the bedding. I bought them for a baby that wouldn't eat well. He didn't eat them either. Good luck either way.
