Solitary Question

HEVYCHEVY427 Jan 13, 2006 08:23 AM

Hi. I was just wondering if bearded dragons do desire company or if they are totally happy to live out their life by themselves. I have a 6mo old male. He seems ok...he likes to sit on my shoulder and ride around the house with me...after I put the german shepherd in her crate of course. I would hate to get another dragon for a companion and stress out Skippy...then I would have to set up another complete habitat and I do not have the ability to do that. Can I get some opinions. I see ads and sites on the web...where they are sitting on each other in groups of 2 -4...I do not want to subject Skippy to a lonely life. This is an older picture of him.
Thanks
Nancy

Most reptiles, like a lot of animals, do not require "company" of other indivivulas of their own species. In many species this "company" can even have a negative effect on the health of captive animals when they are forced to live together in captivity. Male bearded dragons will do this. The larger and/or more aggressive male will harass the smaller/ less agressive one and it will not feed, bask or grow well.

Females can live together. If you have a sexual pair or a male with females be ready to have eggs.

I keep my sexual pair together only when I want to breed them. All summer they are apart.

Lone reptiles are healthy and happy.

God luck,

Bearded dragons do no need a 'companion' in their cage at all. They are naturally solidary in the wild and typically only come together to mate. Though many bearded dragons can be seen in a small area in the wild, most often it's just because the food is plentiful so large territories are not necessary or they are in the same area for other reasons.

The pictures of 'stacked' bearded dragons is due to two things, they are purposely stacked by the breeder/owner to take the picture or are several animals kept in the same cage, either as hatchlings or adults and they are basically fighting for room on the basking spot.
