My ill Chameleon i need advice

zizzi Jan 13, 2006 09:04 AM

My Chameleon Zizzi, has had mouth rot for nearly a week i did take her to vet on monday and have been giving her her medicine as advised. however i am getting concerned as she doesn't seem to be eating still. she is getting deheidrated aswell. i have tried tempting her with other foods like meal worm and hoppers but she just dont want anything. her sores have cleared up tremendously. but it is still worrying me.

any thoughts of a tasty treat would be helpful

thanks

Krissi

Did the vet run any tests on the bacteria to make sure that it would be killed by the meds? Did the vet clean out the area where the mouth rot is? Is it an antibiotic that is being given to the chameleon or is it something that you just put on the mouthrot?

Most chameleons with mouth rot will still drink....and if yours is on antibiotics, its very important that your chameleon drinks well.

Usually the mouth is very sore for a few days...so its not surprising that she hasn't eaten. Try waxworms because they are soft and won't hurt her so much to chew....and hand feed them to her. The easiest way to do this is to get her to drink and as her mouth opens to drink the water slip the waxworm in just between her teeth. Being that she is a veiled, why not try some veggie baby food or soft fruit, like well-ripened melon?

I hope she will recover and eat for you soon!

hey thanks for your input i was given baytrill an anti biotic and another thing to put on the mouth rot. she wont eat nothing really sad now

I'm assuming that the vet didn't clean out the areas where the mouth rot was and didn't take a swab of the bacteria to culture?
If these things were not done, there is no way to know that Baytril is the right drug to kill the bacteria involved. If the areas weren't cleaned out properly by a vet, the bacteria will very likely spread/come back. If either was not done (incorrect medication or not cleaned out poperly) your chameleon will likely die.

Also, your chameleon needs to be well hydrated while taking the medication since they are all hard on the chameleon's system and damage could result to its organs if it doesn't get enough water. If you have an eyedropper, you can put one drop at a time inside its lips and it should swallow it. (I said only one drop at a time because its possible to aspirate the water if given too much at once).

How is the chameleon behaving/acting now?

I'm very afraid for this chameleon.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your poor chameleon. Its never easy losing one of these creatures. Its so easy to become very attached to them. Septicemia is usually bad news with chameleons.
