Repairing aquarium bottom for non-aquatic use

HaikuDan Jan 13, 2006 10:19 AM

Hi,

I just got a 36Wx18Dx19H aquarium of which the bottom is cracked on one side. I would like to house a couple ackies in this, but am worried about the weight of a sand/dirt mix substrate. (While I'm not a big fan of glass tanks for an application like this, I intend to wrap 3 sides with brown paper and then Reflectix insulation.)

I am not concerned about the tank holding water. Any suggestions on how to address this?

Thanks,
Dan

Just set the entire tank on a piece of white styrofoam. That will form to and support the bottom.

I'm sure this will work, but without seeing the crack I can't say for sure.

another thing would be to add a layer of tape to the inside, just to make sure no sharp edges can be rubbed against if digging/burrowing.

I had some rat breeding half height 10 gallon (I guess that'd now be 5 gallon? ) tanks some of which were cracked. I used the 2" package tape on inside and outside and never had any problems.

Good idea. I'll tape it too!

Thanks, Chris!
I thought that approach might do it but wanted confirmation.
I have pink polystyrene sheets on hand that I will need to check the thickness in comparison to the space under the glass bottom.
