Cost of Feed

Ophiophthalmos Jan 13, 2006 02:46 PM

Years ago I was involved in the snake hobby. I had located a lab where they bred rats and mice for experimentation. They sold animals too old for breeding and non-treated controls dirt cheap to me. I was able to feed my snakes quite economically on them. Back then (1960's) most snakes were wild-caught and few captive breds were available.

I started keeping them again now and my little collection has grown to about ten snakes.

Now nearly 50 years later, it seems that the cost of mice and rats has really gotten out of sight. I suppose I could breed my own mice, but I'm not about to breed rats. I know there are frozen mice and rats available, but I prefer to use fresh killed for my animals.

Is there any place availabe to purchase large numbers of mice real cheap live, or actually go in person to pick them up?

I live in northern New Jersey.

Thanks for any advice.

Some pets stores will give you the name of the breeders they use to supply their rats or mice and maybe you can get a large quantity discount..
