Nice looking yellow, Brian.
Very nice snake.
I have yet to see anyone dissapointed with anything they have acquired from Dwight.

By the way Brian,
You have such an excellent collection of North American rat snakes, I always wondered why there are no bairds, trans pecos, or everglades in your collection.
Are these on your list, or are they species you don't care for.
just curious.

Thanks Jimmy
Dwight does not have an updated site yet, that Im aware of. He has been concentrating on building his house and hasnt had too much spare time on his hands. He has said once he gets some spare time he will put up another web page.

Sometime this summer, you caught a hatchling that you identified as a gray -- I remember because you said it was the first you ever caught. Then someone (maybe the same guy who bought one of your Everglades) started arguing with you over whether it was a gray or, as he said, a black rat. How is that animal doing? Are there any signs that it is getting darker, or is it staying light? I didn't (and still don't) have an opinion either way, I'm just curious.

well, he does seem to be darkening up a little.
In 46 years I have never caught one that started that light and there was just "something" about it that said grey not black to me.
The shape of the first few saddles, the neck and the head just all said grey to me.
I have caught many many black rats and it just didn't say black to me.
I'm still not 100% convinced, there is just something about it, but I am leaning more from absolutely convinced to hmmm, I wonder...lol
I guess I might end up owing Zach
time will tell
Here is a pic from maybe a week or two ago

Well, I can see that his saddles have a little brown to them. That brown is something I associate with grays (though I'm positive it isn't exclusive to them), but other than that it looks very much like the black rat hatchlings I've owned. Given, I've only owned two, and they are extremely variable animals, but to me it looks like a black. Down this page a bit, there are some gray rat hatchling pics that are far lighter than the one you caught, and in their way they almost look like bairdi hatchlings. But, then again, that might just be the "white oak" grays. I've seen pics of adult grays that look just like your hatchling. So, I don't really know. I guess time will tell.

jtibbett Jan 14, 2006 05:49 PM

When I mentioned the gray rat hatchlings on this page, I didn't mean the pic I posted, I meant some other people's pics a few posts down the forum. The pic I posted is a black.

Where was this snake caught at Jimmy??
Here are some comparison shots of my KY black rat snake. Here in KY they are not totally black and retain their saddles throughout their life. Lots of speculation, and IMHO, I think that KY is the intergradation zone for the the obsoletus and the spiloides, leaving the population here an "inbetween" variation having characteristics of both ssp.

Here is a pic of him at 5 months old, taken in Jan 02. Notice the saddles are brown and he has a really light gray background. He was this color when I found him, and stayed that way for a good year before starting to change colors......

Here is a pic from tonight. He is a pretty typical black rat for KY. They are pretty variable and can have hardly any yellow overtones with browns and grays to black and gray to what I refer to as the high yellows, such as this one, that have alot of yellow and brown coloration....

Was your snake caught in any intergrade zone for obsoletus/spiloides?? Could there be some gray influence in it?? Just a thought.
Nice looking little snake either way!! Keep us posted on his color change, will be neat to watch!
Brian

Brian,
He was caught in the very Southeast corner of Tennessee.
As far as I know we should only have blacks here.
location and experience say it should be a black rat.
I have seen light specimens, dark specimens, brown specimens, some with quite a bit of reds showing and some with quite a bit of white.
Like I said, this one just didn't have the smae look as the ones I've caught over the years.
But as it grows it is obviously making me lean back towards black.
I do not believe I am in the intergrade zone so I doubt even intergrade can help me on this one....lol
Just a lighter then usual black rat.
Maybe Zach will forget to ask me about it...lol
Just last saturday I took him that other everglades I posted a week or so ago.
He didn't mention the little rat then.....LOL

AH..I didnt forget lol.just got my net fixed and going..I figured it was a black rat because of the location it was found in.. Here in North Alabama I see manly black rats.. Just seemed Chattanooga was way north for a black rat.but it may still turn grey. But like you said give it a year or two.

Beautiful Brian. Looks like your new addition is going to have some outstanding yellow coloration. If Dwight had not been sold out of yellow rats, I would have had three new snakes, LOL
